Winding Down Throb.dev

Published on July 27, 2025

On August 27, 2025, we will officially deprecate Throb.dev, our AI coding assistant for developers. While it's been helpful for quick AI prompts and context-driven code support, it doesn't meet the expectations of a modern technical environment.

All users will continue to have access to their past conversations (as well as start new chats) until the shutdown, and throb-v1 will remain available for developers interacting through the Secton API even after the shutdown.

Why Throb Is Being Deprecated

Throb is powered by throb-v1 (being Llama 3.1 under the hood), with carefully tuned instructions for coding. However, the model's knowledge cutoff was in December 2023, and the software ecosystem has moved significantly since then:

Throb still performs reasonably for lightweight prompts, but its context and recommendations no longer reflect the fast-changing realities of modern development. As a result, we feel it's time to close this chapter.

What's Happening On August 27th

Here's what to expect on the deprecation date:

API Will Remain Available

While the hosted experience is winding down, we're keeping throb-v1 live on Secton Platform. This means:

What's Next

We're not announcing a replacement today. We're exploring what lightweight, developer-facing AI interfaces should look like; and how best to serve the next wave of tooling.

If and when something new emerges, we'll be sure to share it.

Thank You

To everyone who used Throb.dev -- whether for code, brainstorming, or just curiosity -- thank you.

We're grateful for the feedback, support, and ideas you've shared. If you need help transitioning, or want to continue using the API, you can reach us any time at management@secton.org.
